Let's be honest - some days in healthcare feel like we're doing chest compressions on ourselves just to get through the shift. Between short staff, long hours, and emotional overload, morale can flatline before we even clock in!
But here's the truth, we can't pour from an empty cup and we sure as heck can't keep saving lives and making a difference if our own morale and spirit is on life support. So let's talk about Resuscitating Staff Morale: Check out this post for practice solutions- I'm not talking about pizza parties or generic emails, I'm talking about empowering staff and making them feel heard.
Huddle & Heal: Making Space To Be Human
Start with connection. Engage in weekly check-ins with staff. 5 minutes,
uninterrupted, no charting, no patient care. Sit down and say "How are you doing today" and be ready to listen. Ask "What do you need"? If staff are shy to engage, create an anonymous suggestion box and check it regularly to address issues or concerns.
Celebrate The Little Wins (Because They're Actually Big Wins)
Healthcare is full of tiny victories: the IV you got on the pt would said they were a hard stick, a smiling patient where you made a difference, a sincere thank you from a doctor, the team that rocked a code blue. CELEBRATE THEM! Create a shared space where coworkers can recognize each other. Praise often and in public- recognize staff in front of their peers. Make sure to recognize birthdays, certifications, or even just surviving a hellish Monday shift after a long weekend! Let people feel seen!
Peer Support, Mental Health, & Chocolate
Offer peer support and mentorship programs, even seasoned nurses need someone in their corner. Make sure new grads and new employees feel welcome and part of the team.
Encourage mental health days. While it may be easy to approve OT and pick up shifts, make sure staff don't get burnt out - that will lead to a whole slew of problems (lack of empathy, fatigue, mistakes, sick calls, etc). Protect break time like you protect your patient's airway - even 5 minutes in a designated quiet space can work wonders - BONUS if the space has chocolate!
Tiny Perks: Big Impact
Never underestimate the power of caffeine! Host a surprise "Code Coffee" with snacks and coffee during peak burnout hours. Create theme days to bring lightness to a heavy working department. Keep a stocked hydration or snack station - we all know that ER nurses run on caffeine and kindness - give us both!
Just Like A Code: Every Team Needs A Great Leader
Lead by example and demonstrate behaviors and standards you expect from your team. Try not to micromanage staff - trust your team to do their jobs. Maintain fairness and consistency in your actions and attitude. Hold people accountable.
Encourage leadership within the department. Leaders don't need a formal title, encourage everyone to lead. Encourage promotion and help your team advance their careers (moving up the ranks, certifications, professional development, etc).
Have The Team Take The Wheel
Form a morale committee made up of actual frontline, boots on the ground, staff. Empower them to outline what real support looks like. Have the staff come up with ideas for recognition and team bonding activities.
The Heart of The Matter
At the end of the day, people don't leave jobs. They leave their managers and the environment. Let's create one where staff feel heard, supported, valued, and emotionally safe. Morale isn't a luxury, it's a life-saving intervention - one that might just keep your team from coding, emotionally speaking!
WHAT IS YOUR UNIT DOING TO KEEP MORALE ALIVE, DROP IT IN THE COMMENTS TO SHARE- WE ALL NEED A LITTLE SESUSCITAION NOW AND THEN!
